Newsletter May. 2008 #15

Dear Friends,

In this edition of the newsletter, I would like to invite you to learn more about the options that are available for those of us who suffer from hair loss. Here at iAremyhair, we prefer to provide you with all the information, no strings attached. We then take a step back to let you make the best decision for yourself.

Overview

There are mainly three options that people look to when faced with a problem of balding:

1) Hair Replacement Systems

This method involves the wearing of hair systems (more commonly known as a hairpiece, toupee or wig). While it might be perceived to be faux-pas by many, it is also affordable and safe.

2) Hair Replacement Surgery

This would be the surgical equivalent of the first option. Finding a capable team of surgeons could mean the start of a whole new life for those who experience hair loss.

3) Drugs and Topical Treatments

This option tends to give varying results to different people. Though all medicines tend to be FDA approved, how effective can these prove to you?

A Closer Look

We will explore the first option of Hair Replacement Systems in this edition of the newsletter. The other two options will be delved into in detail in the next edition.

1) Hair Replacement Systems

What is a Hair Replacement System?

This basically refers to what we commonly know as a hairpiece (or wig, toupee). This is a completely non-surgical alternative. There are two different types of hair replacement systems: Stock Hair Systems and Custom Hair Systems.

  • Stock hair systems are basically hairpieces that are mass produced according to popular hair colour and sizes. These are relatively inexpensive and more appropriate for those who suffer from hair loss in the standard horseshoe shape pattern.

  • Custom hair systems are done with measurements taken specific to each and every person. Hence hairpieces tend to be more unique. Also more organic graduation into one’s own natural hair can be achieved to create a more undetectable final result. More attention is paid to the front hairline. However, this option is more costly.

Hair systems are attached to one’s head through a variety of options: glues, tapes, clips, etc. These attachments can be used for at least 4 weeks but many prefer to remove their hair systems on a daily basis instead.

Myths

Let’s admit, there is much awkwardness surrounding the use of hairpieces. However, we are here to dispel the myths that are associated with this system.

  • MYTH: Hairpieces tend to be uncomfortable and itchy.
This is untrue as many hairpieces manufactured today are lighter than before and hence allows for more air circulation. Other features like velvet bands increase comfort. Since these hairpieces are available in many differing sizes, they can fit heads snugly without strangling the scalp.

  • MYTH: Hairpieces can cause harm to the scalp and hinder growth of natural hair. On the contrary, hairpieces have proven to protect the scalp. For instance, they help maintain body heat and prevent overexposure of sensitive skin to the elements.

Pros & Cons of Hair Replacement System

Pros

Cons

  • Relatively inexpensive as compared to other alternatives
  • Readily available
  • Used externally and unlikely to cause harm
  • Improvement in mood and confidence
  • Old hairpieces can be bulky and unnatural looking
  • When hairpieces are attached using old methods, hairpieces tend to fall off easily
  • Might take some time getting used to hairpiece and taking care of it

I sincerely hope the information thus far has been useful and relevant. Do look forward to the next newsletter where we will find out more about Hair Replacement Surgery and Drugs and Topical Treatment.

Sincerely,

Peter Lim
