Many people consider hair replacement systems because they're fearful of surgery or can't afford hair transplant procedures, or because they only need to cover temporary hair loss. This chapter talks about making the right choice and prepares you for the care and upkeep of your hair replacement system.
CONSIDERING THE COSTS
The monetary cost is highly variable as it depends on many factors : The quality and durability of the system, the manufacturer's marketing costs, monthly maintenance for cleaning and repairing what hair has fallen out, the purchase of new hair systems as the old ones wear out and so on. Also, the psychological cost of worrying constantly about the new hair (Will it stay in place? Can others tell it's fake?) may outweigh the benefit of investing in a hair system. On top of that, some hair systems actually accelerate hair loss due to the attachment method causing traction on the existing hair.
FINDING A PROFESSIONAL
After considering your budget, you will have a better idea of where to shop. Some shops may simply be out of your price range, but then again, you'll never know until you ask. It will also be wise to check out the credentials of the store and the owner. Useful questions you may want to keep in mind as you search : How long has this shop been in business? Is the shop owner experienced and knowledgeable in the area of hair replacements? Are there any forums that discuss about this shop? What kind of materials do they use and who makes the systems? Do they offer warranty?
CHOICE OF HAIR AND METHODS OF ATTACHING THE HAIR SYSTEM

CHOICE OF STYLE
You should choose a colour that suits your skin tone and a style that suits the shape of your face. You can discuss this with the stylist who can help you find the right style.
KEEPING UP WITH MAINTENANCE
Set up a cleaning schedule for your hair systems, whether you do it yourself or take it to a professional. Some hair systems are designed to be removed at night to allow you to wash your scalp and then reapply the hair system in the morning. For those hair systems that are made to stay on the head for weeks, there is no real viable option for keeping down the odour and removing the oils and sebum that build up everyday. Cleaning the system with it off your head will allow you to get to the foundation and remove oils and sebum more thoroughly than when the system is on your head.
Have your weaves professionally adjusted two or three times a month as they will loosen as your hair grows. The longer the time period between adjustments, the looser it becomes and the greater the risk of traction alopecia. Also, others may detect it sooner or later if your hair system starts shifting around your head!
Attend to it regularly and have the system looked over for potential problems. Problems with the system, if detected early, can be easily rectified.
Have a spare system. It's always smart to be prepared for the unexpected and you never know when you'll need this backup.
Recognising when it's time to replace your hair system. Even the most expensive hair system won't last forever and the shelf life is about a year or two with proper care.
ADJUSTING TO WEARING A HAIR SYSTEM
Not everyone adjusts easily to wearing a hair replacement system. You may feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. Give yourself time to adjust and be patient when it comes to getting comfortable with your new look. If you're not happy with your hair system after a few days, ask yourself these questions : Is it uncomfortable because it's too hot, heavy or itchy? Am I perspiring too much? Is the adhesive making me feel uncomfortable? Am I just simply too self-conscious? Getting to the root of the problem will help you solve it in due time.
GOING PUBLIC WITH YOUR NEW HAIR
You're definitely going to get questions if you've suddenly grown a new head of hair overnight! So beat everyone to it by bringing the topic up first and have your answer ready. Or you can consider getting away for a while and get used to wearing the hair system around people who don't know you. This can give you time to build up confidence about your new look.
The choice of a hair replacement system may well be a lifetime decision and so, take the time to consider every aspect carefully. As you go down the checklist, remember to measure it against your financial ability and lifestyle so that your hair system can be an investment that reaps benefits in the long run.
