AremyHair - 5 Key Differences Between Wigs & Hair Replacement Systems

What do we mean by wigs?

A wig is a single unit that covers your whole head. From natural human hair to synthetic strands, wigs come in many options. Wigs suit those who are bald or have minimal hair (around 5 cm or less). Caps may be made of rubber (like swim caps) or lace with urethane strips for adhesive application.

MONOFILAMENT WIGS are similar to lace wigs but use micro mesh for the cap, offering a hand-tied appearance. There are also “cap-less” or thin-weft cap wigs on which hair is spaced out more loosely, allowing any existing hair to show, and it is cooler and more comfortable to wear.

WIGLET OR PARTIAL WIG. Also called a hair topper, a wiglet is smaller than a wig but bigger and is called so because it is meant to cover only part of the head. Wiglets have holes designed to let existing hair peek through, ensuring a natural look, and are attached to the head with clips or combs.

HAIR WEAVE. Often mentioned together with hair extensions, hair weaves refer to the method of attaching hair extensions to the scalp. The existing hair is very finely braided to serve as a base for attaching the wefts or locks of hair to be added.

HAIR EXTENSIONS are generally used to add length or volume for styling purposes and not for addressing balding or thin hair. Hair weaves are not recommended for people with thinning hair because the weight and the pull of the extensions might make thinning hair worse, or the hair may not be strong enough to support it. The extensions, however, don’t have to be sewn into a weave but can be clipped into existing hair like a wiglet or a hairpiece.

What’s a hair transplant?

Hair transplants involve surgically taking strips of skin with donor hairs from the back or sides of your head and implanting them into areas with thinning or no hair. Surgeons create tiny holes in these bald spots for the donor hairs to fit into. However, this procedure comes with risks, pain, and high costs. Typically lasting up to 8 hours per session, an entire series of sessions and healing periods might extend over two years.

Complications, like bleeding, infection, and scarring, are possible, alongside specific risks such as the failure of donor hairs to grow correctly or uneven growth. These issues might necessitate repeated or corrective procedures. An alternative, more drastic hair transplant method involves scalp flap surgery, where a portion of your hairy scalp is moved and attached to a bald area.

What’s a hair transplant?

Similar to lace wigs, monofilament wigs use nylon or polyester micromesh for the cap, where hair strands are hand-tied. There are also called “cap-less” or thin-wefted cap wigs, where hair strands are spaced out more loosely so that existing hair shows through.

On the other hand, toupees cover bald spots or parts of the scalp with sparse or thinning hair. Like wigs, they are produced from human, synthetic, or animal hair, including a horse, yak or buffalo. Synthetic toupees use man-made fibres and polymers or low-grade acrylic.

What are hair systems for hair replacement?

Meanwhile, a hair replacement system does not entail surgery or any invasive procedure. It involves taking a hairpiece made of natural or synthetic human hair and attaching it to the scalp using adhesives or bonding materials. The entire process takes less than two hours and no pain at all.

Nevertheless, some individuals have reported feeling warm or uncomfortable with the hairpiece. It’s important to note that proper cleaning and regular maintenance of the hairpiece are essential to prevent itching or allergies.

You can shampoo, cut, and style hair replacement systems, mirroring the versatility of natural hair. Wear it confidently while swimming or at the gym. Remember that occasional replacement may be necessary due to regular wear and tear and continuous contact with the skin’s natural acids.

BEFORE & AFTER: SEE OUR CLIENTS INCREDIBLE TRANSFORMATIONS

Wigs vs Hair Replacement System

1. CUSTOMISATION AND PERSONALISATION

Off-the-rack wigs are pre-made with standardised sizes, colours, and styles, lacking customisation. Conversely, hair replacement systems offer tailored solutions, including custom fittings, precise hair matching, and adjustments for individual preferences, ensuring a natural and personalised look.

2. NATURAL APPEARANCE AND REALISM

Off-the-rack wigs may lack in providing a natural appearance due to their standardised design. Meanwhile, hair replacement systems excel in achieving realism. They use high-quality materials, intricate craftsmanship, and scalp-like appearances to seamlessly blend with natural hair, creating a more authentic look.

3. DURABILITY AND LONGEVITY

The lifespan of off-the-rack wigs might be shorter due to mass production and varying quality, often requiring frequent replacements. In contrast, hair replacement systems, utilising superior materials and maintenance routines, tend to offer longer-lasting solutions, minimising the need for frequent replacements.

4. COMFORT AND LIFESTYLE ADAPTABILITY

Off-the-rack wigs might not provide optimal comfort due to standardised sizing, potentially causing discomfort or an unnatural fit. Hair replacement systems, however, are designed to be lightweight, breathable, and adaptable to various lifestyles, ensuring comfort with minimal impact on your daily activities and routine.

5. COST CONSIDERATION AND VALUE

While off-the-rack wigs might seem more affordable initially, hair replacement systems often prove more cost-effective in the long run. Hair replacement systems’ personalised nature and durability contribute to their long-term value, potentially reducing overall costs over time by minimising replacements and ensuring a satisfying experience.
